The Relationship: Impressions and Identity.

Good afternoon, you are looking wonderful today!

Hopefully, that made you smile even if you don’t believe it to be true. Yet it is strange how much people value others opinions even when they have no idea about what the other person values most.

Strangely, I got invited to a party tonight as a +1, meaning that I only know the 1 person.

Quite literally.

And as I was planning what to wear to this unknown shin-dig, I realised that because I didn’t know anything about the group going to this party, I couldn’t highlight any one aspect of myself in order to fit in with them. For example, when I go to gigs, out come the extravagant eye-liner, skinny jeans and the band tee’s. A garden party on the other hand with some of my more snobby friends,  the slightly more expensive summer dresses are deemed more suitable, in order to match the cream teas and series of light badminton. Each of these, and any in between are all true to my identity. I bought all the clothes, I chose to copy the makeup styles etc.

The eternal consumerMarx would be ashamed.

They are all aspects of my own identity which I choose to highlight thanks to a certain situation… Hopefully others do that too, otherwise I clearly have some psychological issues.

But this time, I have no idea who to be, how much of me to be. Strangely, it was quite liberating, searching for a line when your not sure there is one around. Giving you a form of freedom, like a long stretch of self-appreciation after being huddled up for so long. Obviously, when I get to the party this evening, I’ll be able to see the line and hopefully won’t mess it up. But the feeling of being truly at ease with yourself seems to be less about whether you care about others first impressions of you, but instead the  simple understanding that you have no way of knowing what first impression your going to give.

But trying to guess gives your identity, at least, a little room to breathe.
